Illinois Driver’s License or ID Renewal

Keeping a valid ID card or license will require renewal either:

OR

You should receive a renewal letter within 60 to 90 days of your expiration date. This letter will let you know if you are eligible to renew online or if you’ll have to visit a licensing facility.

Renew an IL License Online

To renew your Illinois driver’s license or ID online, first check your renewal notice. If you hold a driver’s license notice, it will let you know if you qualify as a safe driver and if you can renew online. It will also contain your renewal authorization number, which you may need when completing your renewal form.

You can check your eligibility to renew online through the Secretary of State (SOS) online portal.

If you need to update your address with the SOS, you may do so online before proceeding.

To renew online:

1. Visit the online portal.
   • If your renewal letter says you qualify as a safe driver (meaning you’ve kept your record clean for the last 4 years), renew here.
2. Enter your PIN and license/ID number OR renewal authorization number.
3. Answer any additional questions and provide the requested information.
4. Provide payment. The SOS accepts:
   • Electronic checks.
   • MasterCard
   • Visa
   • Discover
   • American Express
5. Print out your temporary credential (valid for 90 days).

Your new ID or license will be mailed to your address within 15 business days.

Renew Illinois License or ID in Person

The IL SOS requires you to renew at your local licensing office if:

• Used online renewal last time you renewed.
• Are younger than 22 years old or older than 74 years old (for licenses).
• Are younger than 22 years old or older than 64 years old (for non-driver IDs).
• Must take an eye exam or have been prescribed glasses or contacts for driving since the last time you renewed.
• Need to apply for a REAL ID.
• Your license or ID is suspended, revoked, etc.
• Need to change the endorsements or information on your ID (besides your address).
• Hold a temporary visitor driver’s license.
• Have a homeless or disabled ID card.
• You owe fees for reinstatement.
• Have a HAZMAT endorsement on your commercial license.
• Wish to have a veteran designation added to your ID.

To renew in person, visit your local SOS licensing office. You may be asked to provide your:

• Current license or ID.
• Renewal letter.
• Medical certification (for commercial drivers).
• Payment for your renewal fee.

Upgrading to a REAL ID requires presenting additional documents.

IL License and ID Renewal Fees

• License for drivers 18 to 20 years old: $5.
• License for drivers 21 to 68 years old: $30.
• License for drivers 69 to 80 years old: $5.
• License for drivers 81 to 86 years old: $2.
• License for drivers 87 years old or older:
• Non-driver ID (under 18 years old): $5.
• Non-driver ID (between 18 and 64 years old): $20.
• Non-driver ID (65 years old and older): Free.
• Disabled non-driver ID:
• Homeless non-driver ID:
• Commercial driver’s license (CDL): $50.
