Illinois Driver’s License or ID Renewal

Keeping a valid ID card or license will require renewal either:

You should receive a renewal letter within 60 to 90 days of your expiration date. This letter will let you know if you are eligible to renew online or if you’ll have to visit a licensing facility.

Renew an IL License Online

To renew your Illinois driver’s license or ID online, first check your renewal notice. If you hold a driver’s license notice, it will let you know if you qualify as a safe driver and if you can renew online. It will also contain your renewal authorization number, which you may need when completing your renewal form.

You can check your eligibility to renew online through the Secretary of State (SOS) online portal.

If you need to update your address with the SOS, you may do so online before proceeding.

To renew online:

  1. Visit the online portal.
  2. Enter your PIN and license/ID number OR renewal authorization number.
  3. Answer any additional questions and provide the requested information.
  4. Provide payment. The SOS accepts:

Your new ID or license will be mailed to your address within 15 business days.
